We worked on the procedures for demonstration of single and double displacement reactions.
Reminderunit test on Thursday - review questions on yesterday's homework blog

We worked in pairs to find the answers to 4 questions about a series of reactants:  type of reaction, products made, balancing, how to test the products to ensure completion.
Reminder:  the unit test is on Thursday.
Homework:  Complete handout on balancing and types of reactions - Experiment discussion and conclusion are due Monday
Test Review:  handout (found on Unit 2 page of site as "review.doc") and p.156 #31, 32; p.149-150 #1-6, 8-10, 14; p.156 #41.

We did the experiment on p.136-137 of the text.
Homework:  Answer the following discussion questions and write a conclusion.  You will hand these in.
1.  Write the balanced chemical equation for each reaction that occurred, including states.
2.  How do you know when a double displacement reaction occurs?

Double displacement reactions either produce precipitates, produce a gas, or are neutralization reactions.  We use the solubility table on p.334 to determine whether a precipitate forms.  Refer to p.132-135, 334 in text for help with these concepts.
Homework:  p.134-135 #25-28; p.140-141 #1, 2, 4

A metal reacts with a compound or a halogen reacts with a compound.  Some combinations do not react.  You must consult the activity series, p.130, to determine whether a reaction occurs.  Refer to p.126, 127, 130, 131 in the text for help.
Homework:  Answer p.127 #21; p.131 #22-24

We completed a quiz on nomenclature.
Combustion reactions are reactions that have oxygen as one reactant.  Read p.123-124 including margins.
Homework:  Answer p.124 #17-20

We discussed the tests for gases, and the results of dissolving oxides in water.  The major types of reactions are synthesis, decomposition, combustion, single displacement, and double displacement.  We reviewed the first two and added detail to what was learned in grade 10.  Look in the text on p.119-123.
Homework:  Answer p.122 #10-12; p.123 #15, 16; p.125#5
There is a quiz tomorrow on nomenclature.

We did an experiment today to produce carbon dioxide and test it in various ways.  The handout for this lab is on the unit 2 page of this site, as "co2 experiment".
Homework:  complete the discussion #1-3 for the experiment and answer p.29-30 #1, 3, 13

We reviewed balancing equations from Grade 10.  Refer to your text, p.112-116 for help, especially the steps to follow on p.116.
Homework:  p.113 #3, 4;  p.116 #5, 6;  p.117 #7; p.118 #9, 4, 5
Prepare for your nomenclature quiz on Friday, by completing the practice quizzes.

Students completed their first unit test.
