We completed a quiz on naming and writing formulas of compounds.  The unit assignment was handed out and students signed up for a chemical reaction.  If you were absent, the handout can be downloaded from the chemistry unit page.  Research should be completed by next Thursday.  The assignment is due Monday, May 28.

We performed the experiment on p.246-247 of the text.  The laboratory report is due on Tuesday, May 22, 2012.  The discussion questions are a-h on p.247.  The rubric is on the chemistry unit page of the website as "displacement reactions rubric".

We discussed how to identify combustion reactions.
Homework:  Read p.248-250 and copy the summary on p.251 into your notes.  Answer p.251 #2, 3, 5.

Consult p.240-243 in your text for help with this.  Record the summary on p.243.  We have a quiz Friday on writing names and formulas for compounds.
Homework:  p.243 #2-4, 7

We discussed two types of reactions:  synthesis and decomposition.
Homework:  Read p.237-238.  Write the summary from p.239 in your notes.  Answer p.239 #1, 2, 4.

We went through the nomenclature practice quiz answers.  For the unit assignment, students will need to do a cost-benefit analysis, so we went through that today, looking at several ionic and molecular compounds as examples.  The worksheet for this activity is on the chemistry unit page.

The period 4 class had an assembly.  In period 5 we had a practice quiz on naming and writing formulas for compounds, then used a couple of online sites to practice balancing equations.  The sites are:  http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/balancing-chemical-equations
http://funbasedlearning.com/chemistry/chemBalancer/default.htm

We attended an assembly.

We discussed the Law of Conservation of Mass, as discovered in your experiment on Friday.  See p.230-232 in your text.  We went through how to represent chemical reactions as equations.  Look at p.225-226 for help with this.  We discussed how to balance chemical equations.  There are examples in the text on p.233-235.  The handout used for this lesson is on the Chemistry page, and is called "balancing lesson".
Homework:  p.227 #2; p.232 #3, 4; p.236 #7

We did the experiment on p.228-229 today and shared our results with each other.  We will have a quiz on naming and writing formulas of compounds on Thursday for period 5, and Friday for period 4.
Homework:  complete the lab report using proper format, including answers to p.229 a-j for your discussion
