VSEPR is an acronym for valence shell electron pair repulsion.  All electron pairs around a central atom are repelled, so take positions around the central atom that are as far from the other electrons as possible while remaining around that atom.  Their positions dictate the shape of the molecule.  Text reference is p.242-248, 798.
Homework:  Use VSEPR theory to predict the molecular shape for each of the following:  HCN, SO2,SO3, [SO4]2-, CH2F2, AsCl5, [NH4]+, [BF4]-.  These are from the handout.  If you have the handout, do #18, 19
